How to (Not) Stay Updated on Internet Explorer

The latest isn’t always the greatest- especially when we’re talking about those pesky automatic updates to your Internet Explorer browser.

Update at your own rate! We’ve compiled some simple steps to disable this feature on Internet Explorer (versions 10 and up).

  1. Open your Internet Explorer Browser, and access your Menu Bar (if your Menu Bar is not readily accessible, right click/control-click on the window header, and click on “Menu Bar”.)   

  1. On your Menu Bar, click on the “Help” tab and select “About Internet Explorer” in the drop-down menu. You will have this pop-up window.

  1. Uncheck the box next to “Install new versions automatically” by clicking on the box, then click close.


Wait, there’s more! Windows 8 performs automatic updates that could affect Internet Explorer, as well. Next step: take it to the Control Panel.

  1. The simplest way to access the Windows Update window is to click on Start and search “Update”. Select the option for Windows Update, which will bring you to this window. (Or access your Control Panel -> select System and Security -> select Windows Update)

  1. On the side of the window, select “Change Settings”, and select the drop-down menu beneath “Important Updates” 

  1. Choose “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”, and make sure that the box for “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” is checked.

  1. Access the Control Panel (by clicking on Start) and select “Uninstall Programs” underneath the category of “Programs” 

  1. In that window (Programs/Programs and Features), click on “View installed updates” in the top left corner 

  1. In the list of recently installed updates, Internet Explorer should appear. (Since I have not recently updated Internet Explorer, it does not appear in my list.) 

  1. Right click/control-click on the Internet Explorer update and select “Uninstall” (or select the Internet Explorer Update and click on the “Uninstall” option at the top of the list)

  1. In the newly opened window, confirm that you would like to Uninstall by selecting “Uninstall” and follow the given instructions (which will most likely include restarting your computer) 


When Internet Explorer has completed uninstalling the update, your Internet Explorer browser will be reverted to its previous version.

And with all of that, you’ll be able to update Internet Explorer at your own rate!
